Term 4 Week 6

This week I have learnt . . .

Maths- This week we started Statistics. I have learnt all about identifying different types of data using, Categorical, quantitative discrete and quantitative continuous. I have also be doing heaps of work on different types of graphs.

Writing- We are starting to write a short story about anything we want, while focusing on showing NOT telling.

Goals . . .

• To complete my short story to a high standard. To achieve this goal I will have to really focus on showing NOT telling and do my best work.
• To finish all my statistics work on time. To do this I will have to focus every time we do maths and work really hard.

Term 3 Week 9

This week I learnt . . .

Maths- I now know what lines of symmetry are. They are lines you can put on shapes, so when folded both sides look exactly the same. I also can find the order of rotational symmetry. Rotational symmetry is how many times a shape can be rotated and still look exactly the same.

Writing- On Monday I handed in my second book review for this term. I did mine on Chinese Cinderella. I think it is one of my best book reviews and I am very proud of it.

Today we had the T.A College testing. I didn’t find it as hard as I thought but I did just run out of time in both the English and the Maths test.

Next week I am going to Sports camp, from Monday to Friday.

Term 3 Week 8

This week I went on the ski trip. I had never been skiing before so I had no idea how to ski. After a short while of skiing I was able to ski down Happy Valley.  That afternoon we went to lessons, but by then we already knew how to ski. It was just about time to go back to the lodge when we decided we would go up to Rock Garden and ski down to the lodge instead of climbing. Rock Garden was so much harder than Happy Valley but Mrs Hose believed we were all good enough, so we caught the chair lift up and began our difficult ski back. I fell once but overall I was doing better than I thought. Eventually we made it! The next day we started at Rock Garden and made it all the way to waterfall T. I had improved so much! For the final day we were aloud to go wherever we wanted at the top of the mountain but we had to stay in groups so we didn’t get lost. Overall I had a great time at ski trip. I loved just about every minute of it. I truly recommend this to all year sevens and sixes for next year. It was a great experience.

Term 3 Week 6

This week I learnt . . .

Maths – How to find the missing angle in a triangle. All the angles in a triangle add up to 180 so you just need to add the other two angles then take the answer away from 180.

English – We are still learning about sentences, but now we are trying to identify the different kinds of sentences, using simple, compound, complex and compound-complex sentences. I can now identify each of the different types of sentences.

Tech Arts- It was our last lesson in science last week so we had our final test. I got seven out of 20 wrong.

Goals  . . .

* To write a good book review that clearly states my opinion of the book. I need to spend more time editing to make sure I don’t have any extra information.

Term 3 Week 5

This week I have learnt . . .

Maths – How to find the surface area of any shape. All you have to do is find the area of each of the faces and add them together. I also can find the area of cylinders by finding the area of the top circle then times that by the length.

English – We worked on sentences. We had a list of sentences that either didn’t make sense or didn’t have the right punctuation. We had to edit them so they were right. I found this kind of hard but learnt a lot.

Writing – We are still working on argument writing. At the moment we are writing about the ban of smoking in New Zealand Prisons. I have just finished my draft but I have a lot of editing to do.

Goals . . .

• To make all of my sentences in my discussion argument make sense. I will have to spend a lot of time editing carefully and I will need to punctuate my work properly. • To win a game in Inter Intermediate basketball. This is next Tuesday until then I will need to practice lots.

Term 3 Week 4

This week I have learnt . . .

Maths-  How to find the area of quadrilaterals and triangles. To find the area of a quadrilateral you need to add the parallel lines together then divide by 2. That measurement is now the base of the quadrilateral and times that by the height = the area. A triangle is really half a rectangle. So, to find the area of a triangle you need to, times the height by the base and divide by two.

Writing- We have started writing a discussion argument about the ban of smoking in New Zealand Jails. I now know how to write a two sided argument.

Goals . . .

• To get into inter intermediate basketball. The trials are sometime next week.
• To write a good discussion argument that follows the success criteria. I will have to spend more time carefully editing my work.

Wearable Arts

For wearable arts Te Uruwhakarewa and I made an outfit out of envelopes. The outfit consists of a skirt, top and shoes, also we added a few accessories. It took us hours and hours to make our wearable arts. I am very happy with the finished product. It wasnt a lot like the sketches we did but in a way it’s even better. There were also things that went wrong on the day like the wool that tied the top together broke and the model wasnt at school but we all got through it and in the end we even made it to the semi finals.

Science Fair

This is my science fair project for 2010. I was studying buoyancy. My question was: What is the relationship between salt water levels and the ability to float an egg? While reserching I found out all about buoyancy and learnt a lot about how salt effecs the water in terms of buoyancy. For my hypothesis  I wrote that I thought the more salt in the water the more likely it was to float the egg. In the end I realised that my hypothesis was right the experiment with the most salt in the water floated the egg.

Term 2 Week 7

This week I have learnt . . . English- This week I haven’t done a lot of English but I did start this week English and I am nearly finished. We are focusing on using sentences in the story as examples to back up our opinions or conclusions. Maths- I now know how to find the percent of a number. If the question is 30% of 10 you need to find 10% by either putting a decimal before the last number or taking the zero at the end away. Once you have 10% you just need to times that by 3 and that’s your answer. If you have to find out 37% of 200 you need use a calculator and go 200 x 37 shift = 74 and that’s the answer. I also know how to find this out: If 135% 72 and you need to find out100% you have to go 72 divided by 137 = .533then multiply by 100= 53.3 is your answer. Tech Arts- We have been making our polar fleeces in soft materials. I am nearly done I just have to sew my other sleeve together then add a grey band around the bottom of the sleeve. Squash- I missed our first lesson of squash this week but we will be having two more lessons. Goals . . . • To finish my polar fleece in the next lesson. I will do this by listening to the instructions and asking for help when needed. • I want to learn how to play squash and be able to have a game. I will do this by concentrating when needed and listen to all the rules.

Term 2 Week 6

This week I have learnt . . .

English- I have been working on dialogue punctuation. I am still learning all the rules for punctuating conversations. I think I have improved a lot with this but am not yet perfect.

Maths- I now know how to add, subtract, divide and multiply fractions. This week I have been working on converting fractions to percentages, for example 3/4 would be 75% because you need to figure out how many times 4 can fit into 100 then times the answer by 3 e.g. 4 divided by 100= 25 then 25 x 3 = 75 so it would be 75%.

Writing- We have been taking notes about cheetahs so that we can write a draft using topic sentences and practicing note taking. I have only just started my note taking but would like to finish my draft next week.

Goals . . .

• Finish everything I have to get done before my experiment for science fair. I will achieve this goal if I concentrate and manage my time.
• To finish my draft for my note taking writing. I need to take my notes carefully and get all the right information.
